MP Ravi Karunanayake has called for strong commitment by people’s representatives and top-level state institutions to revive the country from its economic woes and the disaster.
The task of nation building should begin from politicians, with their insurance cover, allotments to import Double Cabs for them and other privileges curtailed and that money used for the betterment of the public, he said at a media briefing.
Referring to wastages at state entities, Karunanayake said loss-making ones such as SriLankan Airlines need to halt bonus payments and channel that money for the welfare of the people affected.
He lamented the absence of a process to fill the dwindling dollar reserves and said raising exports speedily and saving foreign exchange through the increased use of renewable energy could be possible solutions.
Speaking further, the MP said any significant foreign assistance was yet to come in comparison to the level of disaster faced by the country.
It will be more advantageous to the country to obtain credit on instalment basis, rather than depending on contingency loans, he said.
Referring to the extended fund facility given by the IMF, Karunanayake stressed that things should be done in a forthright manner instead of bowing before the global lender.
