Sri Lanka to exit IMF programme by end of 2027, says Bimal

Minister Bimal Rathnayake announced that Sri Lanka will formally withdraw from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme by December 2027. 

Speaking at a public event held in Polonnaruwa on Thursday, the Minister said the decision has already been conveyed directly to the IMF leadership by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Responding to critics who claim the current administration lacks experience, Rathnayake said the government has not only met challenges head-on but has also laid the groundwork for long-term national development.

He noted that the IMF programme has contributed to strengthening the country’s public service, countering concerns that external engagement could erode domestic governance.
