Tata Group announces compensation for Air India plane crash victims

Air India, owned by the Tata Group, will provide Rs 1 crore to each family of the 204 victims of the recent Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash near Ahmedabad.

The flight, bound for London Gatwick, carried 242 people. The group will also cover medical expenses for the injured and support the rebuilding of a damaged hostel.

Plane crash site The Tata Group, owner of Air India, announced that each family of the crash victims will receive Rs 1 crore.

The crashed aircraft was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner flying from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick.

There were 242 people on board—230 passengers and 12 crew members.Among the passengers, 169 were Indians, 53 were British, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian.

The group will also pay medical costs for those injured and support the rebuilding of the BJ Medical’s hostel, chairman N Chandrasekaran said.Rescue teams recovered 204 bodies, and 41 people have been treated for injuries.

According to Ahmedabad police, one British passenger survived and some local residents might have died since the plane crashed nearby.

It remains unclear if all 204 bodies were on the plane or if some were on the ground when it fell. The plane crashed into BJ Medical’s doctors’ hostel in the Meghani Nagar neighborhood.

Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, the ultimate owner of the Tata Group, expressed deep sadness about the accident. He said, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic accident…This heart-wrenching incident has brought immense grief to countless families, and our thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones.”

He added, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and stand in solidarity with them during this unimaginable time.”

This was Air India’s first serious crash since the airline was bought by the Tata Group from the Indian government in 2022. The Boeing 787-8 started flying with Air India in 2014.

According to FlightRadar24, the plane’s signal was lost less than a minute after takeoff. Its last recorded altitude was 625 feet. The aircraft sent a mayday call but stopped responding afterward.

Air India’s website says the airline operates more than 190 planes, including 58 Boeing aircraft.
