Iran says US voters rejected war as Democrats sweep midterm elections

Iran’s chief negotiator in talks with the United States (US), Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has claimed that American voters delivered a clear message against war following the Democratic Party’s sweeping victory in the US midterm elections.

In a statement posted on X on Wednesday (4), Ghalibaf has reportedly said the election outcome reflected public opposition to the ongoing war against Iran, as well as growing concerns over the rising cost of living.

“Conscience or the cost of living, Americans said NO TO WAR, and we endorse this message,” Ghalibaf has said.

He has also warned the US administration against disregarding public sentiment in favour of external interests.

“If the US govt betrays their public will to serve international paymasters and blackmailers, it will learn our NO comes with a Nightmare,” he has added.

The remarks came after Democrats secured control of both chambers of the US Congress in Tuesday’s midterm elections, marking a major setback for President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.

The election results reflected widespread voter dissatisfaction over economic pressures, rising living costs, tariffs and the administration’s handling of the war against Iran, which has contributed to soaring fuel prices.

The outcome is also expected to complicate Trump’s legislative agenda, with Democrats gaining greater influence over congressional proceedings and oversight of the administration.

The war, which began following US-Israeli strikes against Iran in February, has remained largely at a stalemate for several months.

The conflict has nevertheless been punctuated by sporadic exchanges of fire, with regional tensions remaining high amid concerns that hostilities could escalate into a full-scale confrontation.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to reach an understanding between Washington and Tehran have continued amid uncertainty over the prospects for a lasting settlement.
