The National STD/AIDS Control Programme has urged the public to always use condoms when engaging in oral sex, especially during unprotected sexual activities.
Consultant Venereologist (HIV/ STD & Sexual Health specialist), Dr. Nimali Jayasuriya, said that since HIV can be present in blood and semen, oral sex can be a potential route of transmission and it is advisable to wear condoms to prevent it.
She stressed that it is crucial for men to use a condom during oral sex.
Dr. Jayasuriya also highlighted the increased risk if there is ejaculation, bleeding gums, wounds in the mouth or around the lips (or genitals), or inflammation caused by a common throat infection or sexually transmitted infection.
The National STD/AIDS Control Programme also informs the public that free condoms are available at government STD clinics across the island.
