Gampaha Magistrate Bandula Gunaratne has referred a file to the President of the Court of Appeal to initiate legal proceedings against Inspector General of Police (IGP) over alleged contempt of court, following the police chief’s failure to comply with court orders in two drug-related cases.
The Magistrate has determined that the IGP may have committed contempt of court by failing to comply with judicial directives, raising concerns over the enforcement of court orders and the authority of the judiciary.
In referring the matter, the Magistrate has observed that the failure to comply with the orders had undermined the authority of the court. He has also indicated that the IGP appeared to be attempting to mislead the court.
The referral seeks to initiate proceedings to determine whether the police chief should face legal action for the alleged conduct.
The matter centres on two drug-related cases in which the Magistrate’s Court had issued orders that were allegedly not complied with by the police chief.
The development raises questions about accountability within the police service and the obligation of law enforcement authorities to comply with judicial directives.
