The Government has assured Parliament that there is no reason for public concern over the availability of gas, fuel, fertiliser or medicine, insisting that sufficient stocks are available in the country despite temporary supply disruptions linked to the conflict in the Middle East.

Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Anil Jayantha has said certain parties were attempting to create public anxiety and spread doubts about the availability of essential supplies, particularly domestic gas.

Addressing Parliament, he has acknowledged that gas shipments had been delayed by one or two days due to disruptions associated with the Middle East conflict but has said the situation was expected to return to normal shortly.

He has said Litro Gas was currently releasing 100,000 cylinders a day, compared with its normal daily distribution of 80,000 cylinders.

The Minister has also assured Parliament that adequate fuel stocks were available in the country, while reiterating that there was no reason for the public to fear shortages of essential commodities.

The assurances come amid concerns over the potential impact of geopolitical tensions on supply chains and the availability of essential goods in Sri Lanka.

Rs. 6 billion supplementary estimate presented

Meanwhile, a supplementary estimate amounting to Rs. 6 billion was presented to Parliament for approval by Minister Anil Jayantha.

The Minister also presented a resolution under the State Debt Management Act during the parliamentary session.

The proposed framework is expected to facilitate concessionary financing through financial institutions to support the development of the micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) sector.

The financing arrangements are intended to help improve access to funding for businesses operating in the MSME sector, which plays a significant role in the country’s economic activity.

Parliament is expected to consider the supplementary estimate and the proposed debt management resolution as part of the Government’s ongoing financial and economic measures.
