A medical board report on the health condition of former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, who is receiving treatment at the National Hospital of Colombo while in remand custody, has been handed over to the hospital’s Director ahead of a court hearing scheduled for today (16).
National Hospital Director Dr. Sampath Indika Kumara has said the report would be forwarded to court through the Commissioner General of Prisons.
The medical board, comprising 14 doctors, had assessed Shiranthi’s health condition and prepared the report, hospital authorities said.
The report is expected to inform the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court as it considers the case against Shiranthi over the alleged criminal misappropriation of Rs.10 million in State funds. The case is scheduled to be taken up today, amid concerns raised by her lawyers over her medical condition and ability to appear in court.
When the matter was last heard earlier this week, lawyers representing Shiranthi had informed court that she was unable to appear in open court due to a heart-related medical condition.
Shiranthi is currently being held in remand custody while receiving treatment at the Cardiology Unit of the Colombo National Hospital.
The submission of the medical board report comes as the court prepares to consider the next steps in the proceedings. Any decision concerning her appearance or other arrangements relating to her medical condition will be subject to the court’s consideration of the relevant information and legal submissions.
