Opposition members of parliament (MPs) today (8) signed a no-confidence motion against Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne.

The signing took place at the Opposition Leader’s Office in Parliament under the leadership of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.

A large number of Opposition MPs participated in signing the motion, which has been drafted based on 49 allegations against the Speaker.

The allegations relate to the Speaker’s conduct and the manner in which parliamentary affairs have been handled.

The motion is expected to be formally handed over to Parliament tomorrow (9), following which the Government has indicated that it is prepared to facilitate an early debate.

The allegations contained in the motion are claims made by the Opposition and will be subject to parliamentary consideration.
