A parliamentary Select Committee investigating Sri Lanka’s preparedness for Cyclone Ditwah has questioned senior police officers and a former member of parliament (MP) as it examines possible shortcomings in the country’s disaster response.
The committee, chaired by Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, had recently met at Parliament to assess the measures taken before and during the cyclone, which affected several districts.
Senior Superintendents of Police and Superintendents of Police from districts impacted by Ditwah were summoned to provide evidence on their role in managing the emergency, including the response and coordination at district level.
Former MP Piyatissa was also questioned over remarks he had made to the media concerning the authorities’ handling of the cyclone.
The hearings form part of a wider parliamentary inquiry into Sri Lanka’s disaster preparedness, with the committee seeking to identify weaknesses in existing response mechanisms and determine how they can be strengthened.
The committee is expected to submit its findings and recommendations to Parliament after completing the inquiry, potentially providing a roadmap for improving coordination and preparedness ahead of future extreme weather events.
