Sri Lanka Police and the Urban Development Authority (UDA) have agreed to strengthen security at 24 apartment complexes in and around Colombo, following concerns over alleged drug trafficking and damage to public property.
The decision was reached at a special meeting held at the Colombo Deputy Inspector General’s Office under the chairmanship of Colombo Range DIG Nishantha de Zoysa, following instructions from Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya.
The programme is aimed at strengthening security in housing complexes developed under the Urban Regeneration Project, while protecting residents and maintaining law and order in surrounding areas.
Police have said concerns had been raised over alleged drug trafficking within some of the apartment complexes, with certain incidents also involving damage to public property.
Under the new arrangements, Police and the UDA have agreed to establish additional police posts, increase regular patrols and take stricter action against offences involving public property.
Plans have also been discussed to renovate existing police posts and identify suitable locations for new posts in consultation with the UDA.
UDA Director General Engineer Damith Dissanayake has presented proposals on strengthening security at the housing complexes, following which relevant police stations were instructed to implement the proposed measures.
The meeting was attended by senior police officers, including representatives of the Colombo Central and Colombo South Police Divisions, Officers-in-Charge of relevant police stations and officials of the UDA.
The coordinated programme is expected to increase police presence in the apartment complexes while strengthening measures to address criminal activity and protect public infrastructure.
