The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has summoned 10 doctors who served on the medical panel that examined former State Intelligence Service (SIS) Director, retired Major General Suresh Salley, following concerns raised during the ongoing investigation into the Easter Sunday attacks.
Colombo Magistrate Pasan Amarasena has issued notices directing the doctors to appear before court on October 6, after considering submissions made by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) through a motion.
The summons comes as Salley remains under medical treatment at the National Hospital in Colombo following his arrest in connection with investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.
Salley’s medical condition recently became a matter before the Fort Magistrate’s Court, where it was disclosed that he has an enlarged heart and that a medical device has been implanted to manage his condition.
The details were contained in a report submitted to court by the medical panel appointed to examine Salley.
The court has now required all 10 members of the medical panel to appear and provide information regarding the examination and medical report.
The development comes as investigators continue proceedings relating to the Easter Sunday attacks, with Salley’s health condition also becoming relevant to decisions concerning his custody and treatment.
The former intelligence chief was arrested as part of the investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attacks, which killed more than 250 people and injured hundreds more in coordinated bombings at churches and hotels on April 21, 2019.
The appearance of the medical panel before court on October 6 is expected to provide further clarification on Salley’s medical condition and the findings contained in the report submitted to the court.
