Prison reforms in focus as President meets officials; Sajith pays tribute to slain prison officer

The fallout from the recent unrest at Negombo Prison continued to dominate the national agenda, with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake holding high-level discussions with senior prison officials on reforming the prison system, while Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa paid his final respects to a prison officer killed during the violence.

At a meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat, President Dissanayake met Superintendents of Prisons, Jailers and other senior officials to review the challenges facing the country’s prison system, with particular attention given to the disturbances at Negombo Prison earlier this month and measures aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.

According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), the discussions focused on both the structural issues confronting the prison administration and the urgent reforms needed to strengthen prison management and security.

The recent violence at Negombo Prison featured prominently during the meeting, with the President and prison authorities engaging in detailed discussions on improving operational procedures, enhancing institutional preparedness and addressing the factors that contributed to the incident.

The meeting also examined concerns raised by prison officers regarding their working conditions, operational challenges and welfare. Officials reportedly welcomed the opportunity to directly engage with the Head of State, noting that it was the first occasion on which they had been able to discuss their concerns with a sitting President.

The discussions come in the wake of the deadly unrest at Negombo Prison on July 5 and 6, which resulted in the death of 10 prison officers.

Separately, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa visited the residence of the late prison officer Sandhika Pasindu Madhusara to pay his last respects and offer condolences to the bereaved family.

Twenty-five-year-old Madhusara, a resident of Lunugamvehera, had served with the Prisons Emergency Response and Tactical Force and was among the officers deployed during the Negombo prison disturbances. He was killed while responding to the unrest, an incident that has renewed attention on the risks faced by frontline prison personnel.

Following the tribute, Premadasa had met members of the officer’s family and expressed sympathy over their loss.

The prison disturbances have intensified calls for a comprehensive review of prison security, staff safety and institutional management, with both the government and opposition acknowledging the need to strengthen the country’s correctional system while ensuring the welfare of officers tasked with maintaining order.
