Activist Piyath Nikeshala and five others arrested in connection with the 2022 arson attack on former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s private residence have been discharged from the case today on the instructions of the Attorney General.
The order was made when the case was taken up before Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena.
The six individuals discharged include former Member of Parliament J. Sri Ranga, Bimal Jayasuriya and Senadhi Koshan, along with Nikeshala and two others.
A total of 29 suspects had initially been named in connection with the torching of Wickremesinghe’s private residence on May 9, 2022, amid widespread political unrest and public protests.
Several suspects had previously been released from the case following recommendations made by the Attorney General.
Following the latest development, the Magistrate, after considering the facts presented before court, has also lifted the overseas travel ban imposed on all 29 suspects connected to the investigation.
The arson attack took place during the height of the 2022 public protests, when protesters entered the then Prime Minister Wickremesinghe’s private residence in Colombo and set it on fire.
