Former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, was remanded until October 13 today after being arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) in connection with an investigation into the financial affairs of the ‘Siriliya Saviya’ organisation.

Shiranthi was arrested at her residence in Kirulapone after CIABOC officers recorded a statement from her for nearly two hours regarding alleged financial irregularities and transactions involving an account linked to the Siriliya Saviya Fund.

She was subsequently produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court, which ordered that she be remanded until October 13.

Meanwhile, former National Savings Bank (NSB) Chairman Pradeep Kariyawasam, the husband of former Chief Justice Shiranee Bandaranayake, who was also arrested by CIABOC in connection with the same investigation, was granted bail by court.

Shiranthi returned to Sri Lanka on Monday night (5) after travelling to Singapore on September 16 for medical treatment.

She was admitted to a private hospital in Colombo on September 15 after reportedly falling ill and was subsequently taken directly from the hospital to the airport.

Following her return, police had informed her to appear before the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) on October 13.

Her lawyers had also filed an anticipatory bail application before the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court on Monday, seeking an order preventing her arrest in connection with the ongoing investigation into the financial affairs of the Siriliya Saviya organisation.

The latest arrest, however, was made by CIABOC as part of its investigation into the alleged financial irregularities.
