The National People’s Power (NPP) has taken control of the Galle Municipal Council, with local councillor Sunil Gamage elected as mayor during a special council session held today.

Gamage was elected unopposed, securing 19 votes.

Opposition members exited the chamber ahead of the secret ballot, effectively clearing the path for his appointment.

Former Mayor of the Galle MC, Priyantha Sahabandu of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) was elected unopposed as the deputy mayor.
