Former Member of Parliament Imtiaz Bakir Marker has declined a request to resume the position of Chairman of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), despite being reappointed to the post by party leader Sajith Premadasa.

He stepped down from the role following the outcome of the last general election.

In recent weeks, Premadasa sought to re-engage the veteran politician in a bid to bolster the party’s leadership structure.

However, party sources say that Bakir Marker has not accepted the reappointment and has shown no indication that he intends to do so.

Party sources added that his silence and continued absence from party affairs have been widely interpreted as a firm decision to remain outside the party’s active leadership.
