NPP govt. has proved it has no solutions to economic issues – Wajira

The past three months have proven that this government has no solutions to the problems of the people of the country, says chairman of the United National Party (UNP) Wajira Abeywardena.

Addressing the recent meetings of the Galle, Akmeemana and Habaraduwa electorates held at the UNP District Office in Uluwitike, Galle under the theme “Let’s enforce people’s sovereignty”, Abeywardena said:

“We told the people of our country not to do this mistake to the nation. There is no point in blaming the government for this. No matter how much we inform the voters, they keep making this mistake.

Now the current government came to power on the back of a 77-year curse. If you look at this curse, a coconut was Rs. 100 for all 77 years. Now how much is a coconut? It is Rs. 249. In some places, it is even higher. It will go up to about Rs. 300 in the future. So then, the time they said was a curse was actually better than today.

That is why I always say that in the last two years, there were Toque Macaques (Monkeys), there was Ranil and there were coconuts. The five main mill owners were there, Ranil was there and adequate rice stocks were available. So the people need to understand this reality at least now.

This is why Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe said experience is vital. Therefore, people without experience should not be sent to the parliament. However, the people did not heed his advice. They resorted to ridicule and insults. They called them “thieves with experience”.

When the government has no answer to the issues faced by the public, they accuse us as being part of the 77-year curse. I really don’t understand where they (NPP) are taking the country. The public needs to act with caution now.”
