National People’s Power (NPP) MP Lakshman Nipuna Arachchi has acknowledged that the current electoral system, once seen as advantageous to his party during its time in opposition, now poses significant challenges as the NPP prepares to contest elections from a position of power.

Speaking at a recent NPP public event, Nipunaarachchi said that the upcoming election landscape is not in the government’s favour. “Even securing 70% of the vote may not be enough,” he warned, citing the structural dynamics of the existing electoral framework.

“This system was designed in a way that benefits the opposition. It worked to our advantage when we were the opposition. But now that we are in government, it has turned against us,” he said.

The comments come amid an increasingly tense political climate, with both government and opposition parties gearing up for a fiercely contested local government election.
