Over fifty individuals, including former ministers, senior government officials, and politicians, have recently made pilgrimages to religious sites across the country to invoke blessings amidst mounting legal troubles, according to a report by Sujith Hewajulige in Lankadeepa.
Many of those engaging in religious rituals are currently under scrutiny for serious allegations, including corruption and ill-gotten wealth, the report reveals.
Among the most visited sites is the revered Kataragama Devalaya, where more than twenty former political figures have arrived in recent days to perform offerings and invoke divine protection.
It is also reported that a senior government official under investigation for multiple charges reportedly visited the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya in Anuradhapura.
The visit was conducted under special security arrangements, and the official is said to have received blessings from senior Buddhist monks during his time at the temple.
Meanwhile, a former politician now residing in India is said to have carried out an elaborate religious offering at a kovil there, similarly seeking spiritual intervention.
These developments coincide with a series of high-profile arrests, as nearly twenty politicians and officials have been taken into custody in recent days in connection with various corruption and misconduct cases.
