France and Pakistan condemn ‘Lebanon ceasefire violations’

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot have “expressed concern over serious ceasefire violations made in Lebanon”, in a phone call on Friday morning.

These comments are significant because Pakistan — which mediated the US-Iran ceasefire — has said that the truce covers Lebanon, an assertion contradicted by the US and Israel. Israel launched its most devastating bombing campaign of the war against Lebanon on Wednesday, hours after the ceasefire was announced. More than 200 people were killed that day.

France, however, has argued that the ceasefire should include Lebanon.

Dar and Barot “underscored the importance of full implementation and respect for the ceasefire” in their conversation, according to Pakistan’s foreign ministry.
