A British Labour MP has raised concerns over what she describes as a Sri Lanka-linked online bot operation allegedly using artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content to spread fear, deepen divisions, and influence political opinion in the United Kingdom.

Claire Hughes warned that a Facebook page operating under the name Heart of UK has been publishing AI-generated videos falsely portraying scenes involving British citizens and social unrest. According to Hughes, the account is not based in the United Kingdom despite presenting itself as a British-focused platform.

She claimed the page has already reached hundreds of thousands of viewers online, amplifying concerns over the growing influence of manipulated digital content on public discourse and electoral politics.

The MP alleged that the account is part of a coordinated bot-driven operation originating from Sri Lanka and designed to inflame tensions within British society while influencing voter sentiment in favour of Reform UK leader Nigel Farage.

“This is not a laugh. People are falling for it,” Hughes said, cautioning that sophisticated AI-generated misinformation campaigns are increasingly capable of misleading large audiences.

She also urged social media users to be more critical of the content they consume online, warning that fabricated videos and manipulated narratives are becoming harder to distinguish from genuine footage.

“You can’t always believe everything you see on the internet,” she stressed.

The remarks come amid wider global concerns over the use of AI and automated bot networks in political influence campaigns, particularly ahead of elections in several countries. Governments and technology experts have repeatedly warned that AI-generated misinformation poses a growing threat to democratic institutions, public trust, and election integrity.

The allegations have also drawn attention to the international nature of online disinformation networks, where content produced in one country can rapidly shape political conversations and social tensions in another through social media platforms.
