National List MP of the ruling National People’s Power (NPP), Lakmali Hemachandra, has attributed her party’s underperformance in the recent local government elections to the government’s failure to imprison its opposition members, which she believes led to a decline in voter support.

Speaking in Parliament, she also said that the NPP will not offer cash incentives to lure local councilors in Colombo or elsewhere to establish councils in Local Authorities where the NPP has failed to secure a majority of members.
