Senior politicians representing various opposition parties have voiced strong objections to the recent decision by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) to form a joint administration with the National People’s Power (NPP) in the Beruwala Pradeshiya Sabha.

According to a statement from the office of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, the concerns were raised during a meeting held at Mr. Wickremesinghe’s office yesterday (14).

These opposition seniors conveyed that the SJB’s decision has placed them in a politically difficult position, especially in the context of ongoing efforts to forge a unified opposition strategy to take control of local bodies that resulted in hung outcomes.

The Beruwala Pradeshiya Sabha is one such local body. The SJB and an independent group each secured six seats, while the NPP managed to win only three.

Despite this, the SJB went ahead to form an administration in collaboration with the NPP, enabling them to claim the Deputy Chairman’s post.
