The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) began trade union action on Monday (17), asserting that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s 2026 budget has failed to address challenges facing the country’s health sector.
The GMOA said the decision was taken due to the lack of meaningful solutions for both systemic health service shortcomings and problems affecting medical professionals.
As part of the union action, doctors across the country will restrict several non-essential services, including issuing prescriptions for medicines to be purchased from external pharmacies and recommending diagnostic tests to be conducted at private laboratories.
