Govt rejects claims on tax reduction

The government has refuted claims on social media which indicated it has proposed tax reductions in the 2025 budget.

Speaking in Parliament during the second reading of the 2025 budget on Tuesday, Deputy Finance Minister Anil Jayantha called these claims false and a misrepresentation of the facts.

Rejecting opposition allegations on the budget containing hidden provisions to increase taxes, he accused the opposition of trying to mislead the public.

He clarified that there has been no change in VAT rates, and that the government has actually taken steps to provide relief for those paying income taxes.

Deputy Minister Jayantha also pointed out that the opposition’s call for a budget that extends beyond the fiscal numbers was unrealistic and disconnected from the economic realities the government was faced with.

“The opposition is requesting a budget that goes beyond the numbers, asking us to make life more affordable. But what they fail to recognize is the state of the economy. We are working within the limits of our resources,” he explained.
