Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government, Ruwan Senarath, has announced plans to import 2,000 cab vehicles early next year for use by heads of government institutions, as part of efforts to improve access to rural areas and accelerate grassroots development.
Speaking to the media, the Deputy Minister said that the decision was made to enable officials to better implement development projects in remote communities through local government bodies that have recently resumed operations after periods of inactivity.
“To implement development projects at the grassroots level, it is essential, especially for the heads of local government institutions, to have access to rural areas. We need vehicles, machinery, and tools to create real opportunities for progress,” he said.
The planned imports are part of a broader initiative aimed at revitalising local governance and tackling rural poverty, according to Minister Senarath.
He added that the vehicles would be distributed across all government institutions, not just those within the local government sector.
