India helps Sri Lanka evacuate citizens from Iran

India has expanded its ongoing evacuation mission in Iran to include citizens of Sri Lanka and Nepal, following formal requests from the two countries.

The decision, announced Saturday, comes amid rising tensions in the region triggered by Israel’s Operation Rising Lion and Iran’s subsequent retaliation.

“In response to the requests from the Governments of Nepal and Sri Lanka, the Indian Embassy’s evacuation efforts in Iran will also cover citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka,” the Indian Embassy in Tehran said in a post on X.

The embassy urged affected citizens to get in touch urgently, issuing dedicated contact numbers and advising them to reach out via Telegram or the emergency lines: +989010144557, +989128109115, and +989128109109.

The broader evacuation, launched under Operation Sindhu, is aimed at bringing back Indian nationals stranded in conflict-affected zones of Iran.

As part of the operation, a special flight carrying Indian citizens landed in Delhi on Saturday morning from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

This followed another successful rescue late Friday night, when 290 Indian students—mostly from Jammu and Kashmir—were evacuated from Mashhad, Iran, after Tehran temporarily reopened its airspace.
