Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, Minister of Health and Media said that the new Government has no intention of imposing restrictions on the media and is committed to ensuring that the media operates responsibly for the benefit of the public.

Speaking at a discussion held recently at the Ministry of Media with representatives of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Association, the Minister emphasised the importance of mutual understanding between the media and the Government.

He affirmed that the Government’s responsibility is to guide the media appropriately, not to curtail its freedom.

The meeting was convened at the request of the association to present their proposals and concerns to the Minister.

During the discussion, the association highlighted shortcomings in existing and proposed legislation affecting their work and raised several general issues impacting media professionals.

Dr. Jayatissa acknowledged the current inefficiency of the Media Ministry and said that the Government’s priority is to restore its effectiveness.

He noted that despite abundant resources, inefficiencies in utilising them have hindered progress.

He also criticised past projects that failed to benefit the public due to their lack of alignment with societal needs.

Addressing criticisms directed at the Cabinet, Dr. Jayatissa said that accusations of Ministers avoiding accountability or not engaging with the media are unfounded.

He explained that the Government is focused on building a solid foundation to deliver impactful results, requiring ministers and deputy Ministers to work diligently without seeking immediate publicity.

The Minister also announced plans for a collaborative initiative with the Ministry of Media to commemorate World Radio Day in February with a high-quality programme.

During the meeting, representatives of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Association urged the government to ensure a free and independent media environment.

They highlighted the need to protect the freedom and safety of journalists and media institutions while addressing the current challenges to media independence.

The meeting was attended by key representatives from the association, including its Chairman Asanga Jayasuriya and Secretary Laksiri Wickramage, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Media, including Additional Secretary N.A.K.L. Wijeyanayake and Director General of Government Information H.S.K.J. Bandara.
