The United National Party (UNP) has condemned the anti-Indian sentiment echoed at the National People’s Power (NPP) May Day rally.

“It was the Government of India that stood by the people of Sri Lanka during our economic crisis and supported our economic recovery. The unnecessary attack on the Indian government at the ruling party’s May Day rally certainly jeopardizes Sri Lanka’s international relations,” said UNP general secretary Thalatha Atukorale in a statement today (02).

The UNP also expressed its gratitude to the party’s local government candidates and their supporters who came together to organize 8,000 pocket meetings (cluster meetings) across the country on May 1, demonstrating our commitment to the people.

“The thousands of grassroots meetings were able to show the strength of the UNP. The culture of bringing people to the city to celebrate a political party is over today. Instead, the UNP showed that as a political party, we prioritize taking our message to the people in the villages,” Atukorale said.
