Sri Lanka’s National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has reported a disturbing rise in child related complaints, with 5,461 cases recorded between January and July this year, including instances of teenage pregnancy, child marriage, and sexual abuse.
The latest figures, released by the NCPA, reveal that the majority of complaints—1,126 cases—involved cruelty to children. Other major categories included 330 reports of sexual harassment, 141 cases of serious sexual abuse, and 82 incidents of child labor.
Among the most concerning were 44 cases of teenage pregnancies and three cases of child marriage, underscoring the growing risks to vulnerable minors amid socioeconomic hardship and insufficient enforcement of child protection laws.
The NCPA also received complaints related to child trafficking, cyber violence, and drug-related offenses.
