Police have launched an investigation into YouTuber Sudaththa Thilakasiri following a controversial video in which he predicted the arrest and remand of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The investigation was ordered by the Inspector General of Police after the Professionals’ Trade Union of the United National Party (UNP) lodged a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

In a video published a day before Wickremesinghe’s arrest, Tilakasiri claimed the former president would be taken into custody when he arrived to give a statement to the CID, and that he would subsequently be remanded. The accuracy of the claim sparked immediate outrage.

The video drew criticism from legal experts, opposition politicians, and the public, who accused Thilakasiri — and by extension, the authorities — of compromising the integrity of the legal process and pre-empting judicial decisions.
