Following the loss of control over the Colombo Municipal Council, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is reportedly facing a deepening internal crisis, with rifts emerging among senior party members.
According to a senior party figure, many active members have blamed the party leadership for failing to secure control of the Colombo Municipal Council, a result they believe should have been an easy victory for the SJB.
The internal tensions have been further inflamed by the absence of the party’s General Secretary, who has travelled overseas at a time considered critical for consolidating power in local government bodies.
Party insiders say this move has drawn significant backlash from grassroots organizers.
Critics within the SJB allege that the party leadership showed insufficient commitment during the local government appointments.
There are also growing concerns that some leaders may have adopted a “passive” stance, possibly to shield themselves from mounting criticism over recent political setbacks.
Critics have also pointed to a “contradictory strategy” by the leadership where they rejected alliances during the presidential election, only to seek partnerships when securing local bodies, which has undermined the party’s credibility.
