Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Mujibur Rahman told Parliament on Friday (23) that the people of this country did not give power to the current National People’s Power (NPP) government to stand for the Law of the jungle.
Referring to the murder of the Weligama Pradeshiya sabha Chairman which occurred during a public event, Rahman questioned the government’s response and accused ministers of justifying the killing instead of upholding justice.
“If that Chairman had criminal charges, he could have been brought before court. But he was murdered. This government is spreading hatred and carrying forward the mentality of ’88–’89,” he charged.
Rahman condemned the Minister of Justice for allegedly using Parliament to justify extrajudicial actions, warning that such rhetoric undermines the principles of a civilised society.
“Even in death, every individual deserves dignity. But this government does not uphold that culture,” he said.
He further accused the President and his media wing of engaging in political propaganda while claiming to promote a “new political culture.”
He said that despite promises to eliminate the so-called criminal State, the Government continues to protect its allies and silence dissent.
Highlighting unresolved cases of violence against journalists, including Lasantha Wickramatunga, Keith Noyar, and Poddala Jayantha, Rahman questioned the administration’s commitment to justice and accountability.
