Mobile phone users in Sri Lanka will be able to keep their existing phone numbers when switching to a different mobile network provider from June 2025.

This update was shared by officials from the Ministry of Digital Economy during a meeting of the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Digital Economic Affairs held on Thursday (20).

In a follow-up statement issued on Friday (21), the Parliament’s Communication Division confirmed that the Ministry is also working on building 50 new mobile signal towers in areas with weak network coverage to improve overall connectivity.

The meeting, chaired by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, also covered a range of significant digital policy topics. One major discussion point was the regulation of cryptocurrency, with the President stating that the final stance on its legality in Sri Lanka would be determined based on recommendations from the Governor of the Central Bank.

Other key issues addressed included measures for safeguarding citizens’ personal data, managing emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, and the issue of IT engineers’ salaries.

Additionally, the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Digital Economic Affairs plans to hold a workshop on March 10, 2025, to update all Members of Parliament on upcoming government initiatives in the digital economy.
