A tense confrontation unfolded yesterday (3) off the coast of Kuchchaveli, Trincomalee, when Sri Lanka Navy personnel engaged in an anti-poaching operation encountered resistance from a group of fishermen.

According to Navy sources, the situation escalated when several fishermen allegedly attempted to seize firearms from the naval personnel. In response, the Navy fired warning shots to disperse the group and secure the area.

During the altercation, one fisherman sustained injuries due to an accidental discharge. He was promptly admitted to the Trincomalee District General Hospital for treatment.

The Navy has launched an investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the escalation and the injury.
