Industries Minister downplays impact of US tariffs

The 44% tariff imposed on Sri Lanka’s exports to the US under the new policy introduced by President Donald Trump does not pose a threat to the country at this time, said Industries Minister Sunil Handunnetti.

He stated that he intends to present the new tariff policy to Parliament in the near future and seek its approval.

The Minister expressed confidence that new global markets will open up for Sri Lanka as a result of the trade barriers the United States is creating with other countries.

Therefore, he said he views the current situation as an opportunity rather than an obstacle.

Minister Handunnetti made these remarks in response to a question from a journalist during a press conference held in Colombo regarding the new US tariff policy.
