Verbal abuse of schoolchildren by teachers on the rise

Schoolchildren are increasingly becoming verbally abused by their teachers, said the National Child Protection Authority.

The NCPA has received many complaints that teachers nickname children, subject them to shame and shout, threaten, criticise and insult them.

That has an adverse effect on the personality building of children.

A senior investigator said that on most occasions, the school management takes the teacher’s side, leading to the resignation of the child.

That leads the child to face mental abuse too which could even cause suicides.

Director general of the NCPA Anoma Siriwardena said complaints could be lodged via the hotline 1929.
