A group of former employees of the now-defunct Maga Neguma institution staged a protest today (10) in front of the Presidential Secretariat, demanding urgent intervention over job loss, inadequate compensation, and loss of livelihood.

The protesters, who claim that only a meagre sum was provided as severance when their positions were terminated, said they expect the President to address their grievances promptly.

They highlighted that Maga Neguma operated entirely on self-generated income from 2014 until its closure on March 31, 2023, without receiving funds from the Treasury.

Around 880 former employees are now unemployed, many of whom exceed age limits for employment in other institutions.

The group also alleged that despite the institution’s closure, about 65 staff members continue to receive salaries, bonuses, and salary increments.

“The past governments utilised our labor and later cast us out,” protesters said.
