The Vehicular Emission Test Trust Fund of the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has issued a warning about deteriorating air quality across several cities in Sri Lanka, advising the public to wear face masks whenever possible.

The decline in air quality has reached slightly unhealthy levels in multiple areas, prompting concerns, especially for those sensitive to air pollution.

The worsening air quality is attributed to polluted wind flow from the northern region, influenced by transboundary conditions. This situation is expected to persist for several days, according to officials.

The public, particularly individuals with respiratory issues or heightened sensitivity to pollution, are urged to seek medical attention if they experience any breathing difficulties.

According to the Sri Lanka Air Quality Index (SL AQI), 12 cities are recording slightly unhealthy air quality levels, including Kandy, Galle, Ratnapura, Embilipitiya, Puttalam, Badulla, Trincomalee, Polonnaruwa, and Anuradhapura. Meanwhile, eight cities, such as Kurunegala, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, Mullaitivu, and Kalutara, are experiencing moderate air quality.

The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and continue to advise the public to take necessary precautions during this period.
