Sri Lanka’s national mental health helpline has received over 19,000 calls in the past nine months alone, reflecting a growing demand for mental health support across the country, officials from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) said during a media tour of the Angoda-based facility.

The toll-free 1926 helpline recorded 19,164 calls between January and September this year.

Since its launch seven years ago, the service has answered a total of 162,975 calls nationwide, NIMH spokespersons revealed.

In September alone, the helpline handled around 2,500 calls with an average of 82 calls per day.

Officials emphasized that the 1926 service is entirely free of charge and maintained that all conversations remain strictly confidential.
