Authorities have taken steps to suspend the use of a property at Browns Hill in Matara, allegedly belonging to former Minister Basil Rajapaksa, under Sri Lanka’s Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
The development came after the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) of the Criminal Investigation Department had informed the Matara Magistrate’s Court of the move through a motion filed before Magistrate Chathura Dissanayake.
The case concerns an approximately one-and-a-half-acre plot of land at Browns Hill, Matara, which investigators allege was purchased using money derived from illicit means.
Meanwhile, authorities are taking steps to obtain an Interpol Blue Notice in relation to Basil after he allegedly failed to appear before court in connection with the case.
A Blue Notice is issued through the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) to seek information about a person’s identity, location or activities in connection with a criminal investigation.
The Matara Magistrate’s Court had earlier ordered the confiscation of Basil’s bail money on August 18 following his failure to appear before court in relation to the case.
The latest move comes as investigators continue proceedings concerning the ownership and alleged acquisition of the Browns Hill property, while further legal action is being pursued over Basil’s failure to appear before court.
