Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has urged the Government to take note of the outcome of the US midterm elections, saying the public’s dissatisfaction with the administration should serve as a lesson for the ruling authorities in Sri Lanka.
Addressing Parliament today (4), Premadasa has said the people of the US had rejected the Trump administration over the hardships they had experienced, drawing a parallel with the economic difficulties faced by people in Sri Lanka.
“The people of the USA have rejected the Trump administration because of the suffering they had to undergo. The people of Sri Lanka are also suffering. The government should take note of this situation,” he has said.
He has argued that the Government should pay attention to public grievances and recognise the importance of the people’s response through democratic elections.
Premadasa has also challenged the Government to hold the long-delayed provincial council elections, urging it to allow voters to express their views on the current administration.
“Hold the provincial council elections and see the reaction of the people,” he has said.
His remarks come amid continued calls for the holding of provincial council elections, which have not been held since the previous councils’ terms expired, leaving the provincial administrative bodies without elected representatives.
The Opposition Leader’s comments placed the issue of public accountability and the holding of elections at the centre of the parliamentary debate.
