The Government has presented a supplementary estimate amounting to Rs. 47 billion to Parliament to provide additional financial relief to the public amid rising fuel prices and strengthen assistance for beneficiaries of the Aswesuma welfare programme.
Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Anil Jayantha Fernando has announced the proposal in Parliament today (4), outlining the Government’s measures to ease the financial burden on households affected by increasing fuel costs.
The proposed supplementary estimate is intended to allocate additional funds for relief measures, including further financial assistance to Aswesuma beneficiaries, as the Government seeks to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices on household expenditure.
The move comes amid mounting pressure on household budgets, with higher fuel costs threatening to increase transportation expenses and contribute to rising prices of essential goods and services.
The additional allocation is expected to strengthen the Government’s ongoing efforts to provide targeted financial support to vulnerable segments of society, particularly low-income households that are more exposed to increases in living costs.
However, the presentation of the supplementary estimate will require parliamentary consideration as the Government seeks additional funding to implement the proposed relief measures.
