An International Monetary Fund (IMF) country team will visit Sri Lanka from 10 to 23 September to assess progress under the country’s reform programme and begin discussions on the 2026 Article IV Consultation.
IMF Mission Chief for Sri Lanka Evan Papageorgiou said the mission will focus on the Seventh Review of Sri Lanka’s reform programme, supported by the IMF’s Extended Fund Facility (EFF).
The visit comes as the Government enters another critical phase of its IMF-backed economic recovery programme, with discussions expected to assess progress on fiscal consolidation, revenue mobilisation, debt sustainability and broader structural reforms.
The team will also conduct Sri Lanka’s 2026 Article IV Consultation, the IMF’s regular assessment of a member country’s economic and financial developments and policies.
The seventh review will be closely watched as Sri Lanka continues efforts to rebuild foreign exchange reserves, strengthen public finances and maintain economic stability following its sovereign debt crisis.
The Government has increasingly focused on boosting exports, remittances, investment and reserves while attempting to balance fiscal discipline with increased spending on development and social needs.
The IMF mission will therefore provide an important assessment of whether Colombo remains on track with the commitments agreed under the EFF programme.
The discussions are also expected to take place against a challenging economic backdrop, including elevated living costs, continued pressure on public finances and the Government’s plans for its 2027 Budget.
The September mission could consequently become an important checkpoint for both the Government and investors on the durability of Sri Lanka’s post-crisis economic recovery.
