Shiranthi Rajapaksa, wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, was released on bail by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court this evening (16), after a medical report submitted to the court stated that she requires bypass surgery.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama ordered her release on a cash bail of Rs. 100,000 and two personal sureties of Rs. 10 million each. The court has also imposed a travel ban, prohibiting her from leaving the country.

Shiranthi had been remanded until today following her arrest and production before the court by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) over allegations of financial irregularities involving an account linked to the Siriliya Saviya fund.

When the case was taken up today (16), the court was presented with a medical report prepared by a board of doctors at the Colombo National Hospital. The report indicated that she requires bypass surgery.

Chief Magistrate Bodaragama has disclosed the findings of the medical report while considering the case.

The proceedings concern allegations of criminal misappropriation of funds and financial irregularities linked to the Siriliya Saviya account. The allegations remain subject to judicial determination.
