Former State Intelligence Service Chief Suresh Salley was brought before the Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar today (16) to testify in the case concerning the abduction and enforced disappearance of journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda.
The case was taken up before a three-judge bench comprising Presiding Judge Nayana Seneviratne and Judges Nalin Hewawasam and Lakmali Hewawasam.
Salley has appeared as the fourth witness in the case and provided testimony before the court.
The Attorney General has filed the case against several defendants under the Penal Code, charging them with offences connected to Ekneligoda’s abduction and disappearance.
The charges include an allegation that, on or around January 25, 2010, the defendants conspired with an unidentified group to abduct Ekneligoda in the Giritale, Habarana and Kottawa areas with the intention of secretly detaining him.
Ekneligoda, a journalist and cartoonist known for his political commentary, disappeared on January 24, 2010, two days before the presidential election held that year. His disappearance has remained a longstanding case concerning the investigation of enforced disappearances and accountability in Sri Lanka.
The ongoing trial seeks to determine the criminal liability of the accused in connection with the alleged abduction and disappearance.
