A vessel carrying urea fertiliser to Sri Lanka has been stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting discussions to facilitate its arrival in the country as soon as possible, according to the National Fertilizer Secretariat.
The Director of the National Fertilizer Secretariat has said discussions are currently underway to bring the vessel carrying the fertiliser to Sri Lanka without further delay.
However, the official has assured that there is no shortage of urea fertiliser in Sri Lanka, with sufficient stocks available to meet the requirements of farmers for the upcoming Maha cultivation season.
The situation has arisen amid disruptions to shipping movements through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, where vessels carrying essential commodities have faced delays.
The official has said the authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are taking steps to ensure that the disruption to the shipment does not affect the domestic availability of urea fertiliser.
Sri Lanka relies heavily on imported fertiliser to meet agricultural requirements, making the uninterrupted arrival of fertiliser shipments important ahead of the Maha season.
Despite the delay affecting the particular shipment, the National Fertilizer Secretariat maintains that existing stocks are adequate to meet the country’s immediate requirements.
Authorities are therefore continuing discussions regarding the stranded vessel while monitoring fertiliser stocks and requirements for the Maha cultivation season.
