Ashoka Ranwala is back – highlights importance of tax compliance for society

The government can serve society and its beneficiaries only if successful and stable business persons pay taxes properly, claimed the former speaker, MP Ashoka Ranwala.

The MP further explained that the government has faced a serious tragic situation in the past, due to the inability to collect tax revenue. If a business person uses his own money to carry out welfare activities, in times like this, such people should be commended, he added.

“Only if successful and stable businessmen pay tax money properly, the government can benefit the society. But we faced a serious tragedy in the past due to the inability to collect the tax. That was our experience.”

The MP said this on January 1, when he participated for the 23rd time in a program organized by the Jayakirana Group to provide welfare to schoolchildren, pregnant mothers, and the elderly.

“Everyone knows that our treasury had hit the rock bottom. At that time, the President was trying hard to provide school books and uniforms to children. When this matter was brought to the Parliament, some have brought up other issues and made the Parliament a complete mess. If MPs had not acted with great discipline at that time, it would be impossible to provide those books and uniforms to the children this year. In such a situation, the government was trying to provide school uniforms and books to children, and a businessman from Biyagama came forward to spend his personal wealth for a social need. We should commend that,” he added.
