Leader of the United National Party (UNP) and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe stated today that the National People’s Power (NPP) is unlikely to secure a majority in most local government bodies at the forthcoming Local Government elections.

Speaking at a gathering yesterday (21)held at the UNP headquarters, Sirikotha, Wickremesinghe dismissed the possibility of another sweeping victory for the NPP, which has enjoyed recent electoral success.

He emphasized the need for opposition parties to form strategic alliances in order to counter the NPP’s influence and ensure more balanced representation at the local level.

“The position of chairperson in local authorities is awarded to the group that commands a majority,” Wickremesinghe noted. “It is therefore essential that opposition parties engage in dialogue and work together to prevent a concentration of power.”

The former President also questioned whether voters would be willing to entrust the NPP with another opportunity, following its victories in the previous two elections.

He argued that the electorate has had ample time to assess the performance and governance capabilities of the current administration.
